During the summer of 2022, I’m directing a project of undergraduate researchers through CURI (Collaborative Undergraduate Research Institute) here at St. Olaf. I was fortunate to be able to put together a passionate and inquisitive team with interests in Gender Studies, Psychology, and Race and Ethnic Studies, among other disciplines, to add more to the Responses to Thunberg database and conduct analyses of Greta’s reception in international media through various lenses chosen by the students. Since we’re working with news media, particularly opinion journalism including editorials and op-eds, I thought it would be interesting for the students to visit a local newspaper office to learn more about its role in our community, the challenges local journalism is facing, as well as the kind of considerations that go into editing the opinion pages. Pam Thompson from Northfield News was a warm and generous host, and we had a really engaging meeting, discussing everything from local views on climate change to how she chooses columnists. They published a little write-up of our visit as well.
