Creative Development

The four courses in this category span a range of departments and incorporate many interdisciplinary elements. They were not specifically musical theater based, however they allowed me to explore my creative self through other outlets and overall become a more understanding artist, performer, and person.

ID 229 Arts Management (Fall 2020)

Strategic planning, budgeting, fundraising, audience development, and human resources management were some of the primary topics covered in this interdisciplinary arts course. As a performer and creator I am also interested in studying the “behind the scenes” aspects of artistic performance. This course introduced many current struggles that arts administrators face and walks students through multiple real life strategies to learn how to handle these situations.

ID 205 Creativity Practice and Theory (Fall 2019)

Creativity Practice and Theory allowed me to express my creative self through multiple forms and mediums. Some examples of classwork included site specific dance performance, collage, sewing, and the creation of positive activism posters. Each class project required creativity, innovative thinking and problem solving, and class readings mainly consisted of creative theories to guide our practices. This was a unique interdisciplinary course that reminds me of the collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of musical theater, because as a performer it is necessary to be aware of multiple art forms and practices.

THEAT 338 Top: Who Owns the Arts (Spring 2020)

This course investigated ethical dilemmas specific to a theater setting. The coursework required us to explore topics such as censorship, funding, arts advocacy, and arts education. These topics are incredibly relevant in today’s world and this course highlighted the importance of discussing these subjects. I enjoy the learning outcomes of this class because I think these topics both broaden my knowledge of the theater world and teach me how to be an intelligent and relatable performer and creator.

Soan 261 Gender in Cross Cultural Perspectives (Fall 2020)

As an artist it is necessary to understand the world around me through many contexts. This course explored the differences men and women experience throughout life in cultural, religious, and economic settings in multiple countries including the United States, Latin America, East Asia, India, and the Middle East. Understanding gender roles and cultural expectations throughout our world is highly important because this greatly influences the appearance of these topics on the stage, and through all forms of performance and visual arts. This course encouraged me to be a well rounded and creative artist and to question the relevance of the work that I create and take part in.
