About Maxwell Rubin

My name is Maxwell Rubin. I am a double-major in Mandarin Chinese and Political Science. I began studying Chinese during my first year of high school in Southern California, where I soon became intrigued with this foreign language and culture, a drastic change from the mostly European and American culture that surrounded me for most of my life. My interest in Chinese and Asian history/culture continued to grow throughout college, where I unexpectedly declared myself as a Chinese major. At St. Olaf, I have been fortunate to challenge myself inside and outside the classroom, whether it be speaking, reading, and writing in Chinese or understand perspectives and beliefs from Asian cultures. As a student of American history and political thought, I have grown to become interested in much of Asia's history, philosophies, and interactions with the West. While I plan on stepping inside America's political arena in my future career, it is quite possible that having a background in Chinese language, culture, and history will help me work with China if I am to be elected to a political office.
