PROGRAM OF STUDIES: DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS

Entrepreneurial Leadership

The Management and Marketing courses will help me better understand the way real world human success is created within management, marketing and sales professions. The related courses will provide building blocks of knowledge in leadership, management, and marketing skills, directly correlating to leadership qualities such as strategic vision, calculated risk taking, and talent acquisition and management.

MGMT 251         Management                   Spring 2019

This class familiarizes students with the major management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. The study of management theory is linked with application exercises. Students begin to develop the management skills necessary in any organization, whether it is a for-profit or not- for-profit venture, a small business, or a large corporation. This course will help me develop and understand leadership qualities such as strategic vision, as well as talent acquisition, development, and management.

MGMT 360               Foundations of Sport Management                    Completed

This course provided an overview of the academic and professional sport management industry. Topics and challenges specific to the industry were examined. We learned about professional career paths, tasks, and duties of sport managers with a focus on practical examples of sport management skills and strategies, as well as relevant theoretical concepts. Professional organizations such as the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings as well as amateur programs like MSU Mankato Athletics and the Mankato MoonDogs were studied.  We learned about the similarities and differences in administering these organizations as well as the different challenges and goals of each organization. Management is used in every industry out there. This class was the ideal way to better understand how management is used in other industries.

MGMT 256     Entrepreneurship                   Spring 2019

This course introduces students to the principles and importance of entrepreneurship, covering both the theory and practical aspects of the subject. I will acquire a greater understanding of the entrepreneurial process: a process of opportunity recognition, resource gathering, and team building driven by communication, creativity, and leadership. I will learn about the history of entrepreneurship, how entrepreneurs behave, and the process of taking an idea from inception to ultimate business. This class will increase my strategic planning skills and help better understand the risk reward potential of being an entrepreneur.

MGMT 383   Policy and Strategy     Spring 2020

This is a capstone course for students with a management studies concentration or management area of emphasis in the economics major. Students have the opportunity to further develop their planning and decision-making skills through focused study of the management literature and case analysis exercises. Emphasis is given to identifying, analyzing, and solving organizational problems, which are strategic in nature and cut across all functional areas of the organization. Other than internship experience this class will best prepare me for day to day duties in a management field.  Identifying and working to solve problems and challenges is a primary duty for any leader, especially in a business setting.  I will learn to solve problems across a broad spectrum working with various constituencies.

Marketing and Communication

The Communication segment courses will dive deeper into known studies of how individuals in our society interact successfully. They will not only help build communication skills, but also self-confidence.

MGMT 310 Principles of Marketing       Completed

Along with Sport Marketing, Principles of Marketing focused on the promotion and selling of goods and services. This course provided a fundamental understanding of marketing concepts with emphasis on the pricing, promotion, and distribution of need-satisfying products and services in domestic and international markets. It touched on many skills, most importantly the significance of listening. In any business or personal relationship, effective communication is vital to the health of the partnership. I gained experience utilizing techniques of active listening, including positive body language and utilizing clear, concise verbal communication. We also examined buyer behavior, targeting and market strategy and planning. I was able to utilize these skills during my internship with the Mankato MoonDogs. I designed online marketing initiatives and created written marketing material.

MEDIA 160                         Mass Media       Spring 2020

This course encourages students to assess and shape their personal relationship to mass media. Its premise is that we are all, to some extent, uninformed and uncritical consumers of media products and services rather than conscientious and socially-minded users of them. In this spirit, the course provides a comprehensive historical overview of the various print and by examining the issues that have influenced the development of the mass media, the course considers ideological, cultural, aesthetic and ethical perspectives. Communication and leadership happen in many various ways in the world today with one of the top ways is through media platforms. This class through the academic lens of better understanding humans using mass media, will prepare me for successful encounters in the working world dealing with media encounters.

MGMT 201         Organizational Storytelling                   Spring 2020

In an age of information overload, stories can rise above the noise. Effective storytelling helps to engage an intended community on a meaningful and emotional level. Because leaders must motivate and inspire teams, developing this skill and connecting to others in meaningful ways will be critical to my success. In this class I will have to opportunity to explore the craft of storytelling and study a variety of media (analogue and digital) on which the story can be delivered. Effective storytelling and communication can be the difference of success and failure in the real world. The course will include case study analysis, group work and client-based projects.

Ethics and Human Interaction

The courses within the final sector, Ethics and Leadership, will provide a baseline of how our society creates success by working together. Looking at businesses firsthand via internships and through an academic lens will improve entrepreneurial leadership skills such as decisiveness, continual learning, and leading by example.

NOR 282                          Ibsen                                                                     Spring 2020 This class will examine ethical theories and relate them to the moral concerns of today. Important topics covered in class will include rights, duties, egoism, gender roles, and how they have evolved overtime. As Henrik Ibsen’s plays are filled with key understanding points of ethical issues, this class will help understand the background and key points to those issues. A key leadership skill is leading by example which includes being honest and ethical, having strong values and living what one is preaching.

SOAN 269     Urban Sociology           Fall 2018

It has broadened my knowledge on issues cities face and the impact these challenges have on residents and businesses.
