Senior Capstone Project: Lacrosse at St. Olaf Exploration

Goal

The Senior project is meant to act as a “capstone” to the major, effectively combining skills and knowledge learned through all the preceding course work. The senior project combines concepts, ideas, and skills learned to create a cohesive project meant to demonstrate the knowledge the student has gained over the course of the major.

Execution

My Senior Project started out with some broad ideas around college sports.  My ideas revolved around a possible coaches panel, a project regarding ethics in sports, and a possible situational project.  I could not decide what my senior project might look like, so I reached out to connections that I have in the Athletic Administration Realm.  I wanted a project that could be useful in an interview process to show employers something that I have done that relates to that field.

After those conversations, I decided that the best idea for the project was to do a situational project.  The idea that I settled on was the Exploration of Adding Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse at St. Olaf.  My project started with some basic research about colleges adding sports and what that entails.  Quickly after, I had a conversation with Ryan Bowles, Athletic Director at St. Olaf, who provided me with a lot of insight and what he would think about in a situation like that.

Following that conversation, I conducted six other information interviews with people on campus that would have some stakes in making a decision like this.  I spoke with President Anderson, Colton Funk, Lindsey Markel, Ryan Townzen, and Janet Hanson. I also had the pleasure of having an information conversation with Duey Naatz, the Athletic Director of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, who has just recently went through a similar process adding women’s lacrosse as a sport at his respective University.

The final piece for this project was the written document and slideshow presentation with all of the research that I compiled over the course of the semester and propose what St. Olaf would need to do to make adding Men’s and Women’s lacrosse possible.  I have a budget analysis excel sheet that shows the various costs of having added staff, equipment and other costs that go into the program.  It also has all of the money that will be made and shows the yearly revenue up to five years out.
