Organization and Administration

Courses in this group will be providing me with knowledge and experience in the field of athletics and management to be successful in leadership and organization.

MGMT 251: Management (Fall of ‘20)

In this course, students studied major management functions and explored planning, organizing, leading and controlling with application exercises. In this class I was familiarized with planning, organizing and leading. This will be beneficial in the sports worlds to help work in or ultimately lead a sports organization. This class will go hand-in-hand with being a successful administrator or coach.

MGMT 225: Principles of Accounting (Fall of ‘20)

This class introduced the four important financial statements: income statement, statement of retained earnings, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows.  The knowledge learned in this class will be beneficial in an administrative position.  It will be a great addition to understand the financial side of the position.  In college athletics, administrators work a lot with money, such as, donations, revenues, and expenses.  The understanding of the financial statements will help keep track of money coming in and going out of the department or programs.

MGMT 250: Marketing (Spring of ‘21)

This course introduces the key elements of marketing, such as, evaluating market opportunities, targeting, and market strategy and planning.  This will be important in an administrative role to put your teams and schools out there, to market to donors why they should invest or donate to the programs. Marketing within the organization is also important when talking about culture and representing the organization.

MGMT 383: Management Policy and Strategy (Spring ‘22)

This course further develops planning and decision-making, with an emphasis on identifying, analyzing, and solving organizational problems.  This will be very functional and beneficial in the world of sports.  In taking the course, I will be continuing to refine the skills necessary for a career in Athletic Administration.

MGMT 252: Legal Aspects of Business (Spring of ‘21)

In this course, students investigate the legal framework in which the business enterprise is conducted, including: contracts, personal rights and duties, agency, negotiable instruments, and more.  When working in administration, contracts will be a large part of the job.  Whether it is hiring coaches, signing players, or hiring other staff, contract knowledge will be vastly important.

ESTH 298: Intro to Coaching and Leadership ( Interim ‘21)

During this course, I worked directly with coaches from across the country on a wide spread of sports to learn about the best methods of coaching, as well as, being a leader for a team.  More specifically talking about topics such as: motivation, communication, giving feedback, working with assistant coaches, practice planning, time management and more.  In athletic administration, it is important to understand coaching because you want to hire the best coaches and you work directly with coaches everyday.  In addition to that, all of those topics discussed in this course are very useful attributes in this field of work, as well as any.

ESTH 295: Internship and Reflection Seminar (Interim ‘22)

For this class, I worked with a youth football company called My7on7.  My 7on7 runs 7on7 football leagues in the winter and spring and have travel teams that travel all over the country to play in national tournaments.  I worked in many different roles.  I was a sire coordinator for the winter and spring leagues, I was in charge of the volunteers for the yearly tournament My7on7 hosts at East Ridge High School.  I helped with travel and scheduling college visits for the travel teams when they were traveling to tournaments.  This was a great experience because it gave me a very good hands on experience in administration.

Social Contexts

These psychology courses will give me a better understanding and a professional perspective on human rationale, thought processes and human function.

EDUC 290: Educational Psychology (Spring of ‘21)

In this course, students study theories and research into human behavior, growth and development, and how people learn and can be taught effectively. In the realm of administration, you are working with coaches all the time.  Understanding the basis of how people learn and the best way for teaching would be beneficial when working with coaches and hiring coaches.  This course would also be valuable if I decide to pursue coaching and it is vital to understand how people learn effectively.

PSYCH 241: Developmental Psychology (Fall of ‘21)

This course covers how environmental and biological factors influence human development.  In an athletic director or coaching role, understanding how and why people respond to environments is important.  This is important to be able to push people to fulfill their potential, or to get the most out of them.  This course also gives insight into how experiences shape people, which is important because this will make it easier as a coach or administrator to relate to whomever you are working with.  This will especially help when communicating with different age groups, whether that might be young athletes, high school athletes, college athletes or possibly even professional athletes.

PSYCH 249: Social Psychology (Spring of ‘22)

This course focuses on prejudice, emotions, human interaction and self-esteem and how those come about within people and how they can affect people.  Many of those states are present in the world of sports on and off the field, as well as, in the workforce.  This knowledge will help with communication as an administrator or coach.  Being able to understand the fundamental reasons behind the behaviors, will increase the effectiveness of the communication.

Historical Aspects

Through these courses, I will learn about discrimination that has happened through out history in the world of sports.  With this knowledge, I can help overcome the discriminations that may happen within athletics.

SOAN 299: Women, Sport and Culture (Fall of ‘21)

This course focuses on how race and gender have impacted sports. The class focuses on how women and people of color have been discriminated against in the realm of sports.  By examining the roles of gender and race in sports and how they’ve changed over time, I will be able to comprehend why they are treated the way they are in society and sport.  By looking through the historical lens of gender and race biases, this will help them to overcome them in a professional setting in the field of athletics in today’s world.

PHIL 258: Ethics, Economics and the Marketplace (Spring of ‘22)

In taking this course, I will learn about how markets from ancient times until the present day and how they are run by moral values of freedom, fairness, justice, and ideals of the good life.  This course will serve as a great connector between making money and doing what is right for the athletes or program.  Since college athletics is a business, making a profit is part of the job but that is not the most important part.  The information learned in this class will help me in any administrative position in the future.
