Course Rationale

My individual major integrates concepts from diverse fields such as epidemiology, sociology, anthropology, psychology, history, and social work.

Epidemiology:

  • Use and produce data to analyze disparities in health outcomes and disease
    burden.
  • Further develop and create scientific + knowledgeable basis for policy formation
    in communities with health inequities.

Social Sciences (Sociology, anthropology, psychology, and history):

  • Explore how societies and different cultures practice and perceive health
    behaviors differently.
  • Explore the impact and ramifications of adapting or introducing a policy and its
    social and cultural influences.

Social work + social policy:

  • Examine how policies and practices historically disadvantage the sick and how we can better meet the needs of those underserved in our communities.
  • Use conceptual framework of policy making to better understand how decision
    makers use scientific knowledge to guide policy-making
