As I finish up my second week in turkey, I have had a lot of time to think about the purpose of our unit and the others. A question I will ask is why did the architects choose to do the things that they did? We’ve found a lot of evidence to suggest that some of the walls we see were added in after the original walls/house. There’s even evidence of a doorway added in. Why is this here? We’re close to opening another locus below our first one, and reaching the surface/ bedrock. There is also evidence to suggest that there was a fire, which could be a huge point in why they made changes in the layout. I think my wildest theory is that this was a “party house” or a place of communal gathering. We’ve been told about a “mudroom”(for lack of a better term) that had a hippo ivory dice found there. There sheer size of the building also baffles me. There has been so much to uncover and there only a small portion that we’ve begun to excavate. Another fun one that we like is the elephant training room. There was a recent discovery of 2 marble pieces, carved in the shape of an elephants face. What else could this mean? This is the elephant party room. No debate. Thank you for your time
