After a week of clearing wall fall and loose, organic soil we were finally able to open Trench 4 on the acropolis of Antiochia ad Cragum. After taking beginning measurements for height and trench dimensions, we began another 10 centimeter pass over Locus 2 and we continued to do this for every day of the week. Our finds consist mostly of roof and floor tiles, large pieces of pottery with a very coarse fabric, although we have found a few diagnostic fineware and coarseware pieces, primarily amphora toes and handles. This week also saw the first loomweight found in Trench 4, which supports the preliminary hypothesis that the acropolis was used for industry. I believe that the area housed a small community but hosted a significant amount of cottage industry, which would not have been seperated from the living quarters and would not have been exported. So far the sites that we have visited have not had the same signs of a smaller community which lives past the abandonment of the primary city, so it is difficult to find similar cottage industry explicitly, although it most likely existed across cities and time periods. It will just take time to uncover more of the acropolis and to find out more about what went on at Antiochia ad Cragum.
