What thoughts and behaviors do you use to manage stress? When did you develop those strategies? Behavioral and biological systems shape how we cope with challenges throughout our lives. First, I will present a series of studies testing the impact of chronic early life stress on the development of self-regulation. In line with the pubertal recalibration hypothesis, findings point to adolescence as a sensitive period for positive development following adversity. Second, I will describe ongoing work examining how heightened sensitivity to social cues and developing coping skills shape stress responses in adolescence. Together, these studies highlight psychological and biological factors that promote resilience in the face of stress.
