3. Write a “gut claim”

Once you’ve chosen a topic, write your “gut claim” about this topic. A “gut claim” is an opinion on this issue that seems right to you. You may have heard others argue in support of this claim or criticize it in your family, in school, on social media, or in traditional media, like TV and radio.

 

Here are some examples:

  • High school classes should start one hour later because research shows it’s better for students’ health and learning.
  • The minimum wage should be increased, but not too quickly, or some people may lose their jobs.
