The purpose of these lessons is to help you learn and use persuasive skills that can be effective in written or spoken communication, such as persuasive essays, speeches, or debates. Greta Thunberg has become famous in part because of her ability to effectively persuade other people to listen to her arguments and sometimes even change their opinions or behaviors. These lessons use Greta as a “mentor writer” and speaker to help you learn to persuade others in a similar way on a topic you care about.
This writing sequence is inspired by the C3WP approach to teaching evidence-based argument writing developed by the National Writing Project. Specifically, the lessons employ techniques described in “Routine Argument Writing: Practicing Argument Moves” and “Writing a Claim about a Current Event”.
