Hi everyone! My name is Samantha Maul and I am a sophomore at St. Olaf. I am planning on double majoring in Environmental Studies and Music. At St. Olaf, I am involved in the St. Olaf Environmental Coalition, Trio Mentoring Program, Equestrian Club, and I sing in St. Olaf Cantorei. I also work as a tour guide in Admissions. I was interested in taking this course because I am curious to learn more about our political system and democracy. I am also toying with the idea of going to law school after St. Olaf, so I think this experience could be enlightening in determining if that could be a good fit for me. As a music major, I also thought it would be fascinating and relevant to learn more about the intersection of art and democracy, and perhaps helpful for examining career opportunities and ideas in the future.
I am very excited to see the monuments, architecture, and culture of the city. However, nothing excites me like the food and the shows (I’m a bit of a musical theatre nerd)! I am a little nervous to live in a large city like this for such a long time, but I am sure it will be an intriguing experience.
I come from a small rural town in Minnesota, so perhaps I can offer some perspective on the views of those in rural regions of the United States. I grew up on a small horse farm, so I am well acquainted with outdoor work, and life in the country. Some details about me… I am an accomplished equestrian. I love to cook, as well as make/drink any hot drink (hot cocoa, tea, apple cider, coffee, mmmm…). I’m not experienced at microwave cooking though so that will be interesting. I have basic piano skills and can speak moderate French. I’m also a Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars fan. A random skill I have is designing flower arrangements (I worked at a florist in High School). I love desserts so if anyone wants to go donut shop hopping, hit me up. I’m also pretty organized and love to be on time, so I can keep us on schedule. I love animals and have tons at home, so if anybody needs to see some dog, cat, or horse pictures to get them through the day, just let me know.
Here’s a sample of my adorable pup Finn.
I also love traveling, but this is my first time on the East Coast so I’m super excited to enjoy this new experience with all of you!
