The first photo shows the four founders and builders of the department: William Narum (top left), Fred Stoutland (top right), Walter Stromseth (bottom left), and Howard Hong. They have died, except for Walt Stromseth, who is in fine health. As a subject, philosophy was taught at St Olaf since the 19th century, but it became an independent department in 1949. I was very fortunate to join such a fine group of philosophers and friends in 1972. The department website (link below) has a history of the St. Olaf Philosophy Department.
The second photo shows philosophy department members at tree-planting ceremony for Walt Stromseth and Fred Stoutland, May 21, 1999. Left to right: Jeanine Grenberg, John Poling, Ed Langerak, Gordon Marino, Bill Narum, Rick Fairbanks, Fred Stoutland, Walt Stromseth, Vicki Harper, and Corliss Swain.
The third photo shows some of the department members at a retreat with Philip Kitcher in 2012. Included are: Back row: Carl Hughes (visiting Kierkegaard scholar), Anthony Rudd, Walt Stromseth, Vicki Harper, Danny Munoz-Hutchinson, Corliss Swain and Jeanine Grenberg; Front row: Jason Marsh, Mike Fuerstein, Philip Kitcher, Arthur Cunningham, and Charles Taliaferro. Click on department website for all the current members.
