My use of applied linguistics has extended beyond the classroom, and my knowledge has been cultivated through other professional experiences. Here are representative examples of some of the extra-curricular and job-based applications of my work in the field of linguistics.

Language in Media Internship

March 2020-November 2020

Researching the portrayal of BIPOC, immigrants, and refugees in popular media sources alongside other interns. Data collection taken from the Houston Chronicle (my contribution) and other media sources. Compiling a sociolinguistic report about the discussion of these marginalized groups in popular media.

Private Norwegian Tutoring

May 2020-Present

Teaching of over 100 students to date, ages 6-15. Offering classes with a custom curriculum at the intermediate and beginner level, as well as cultural classes with a language component. All classes and lesson plans individually built.

University-Level Norwegian Instruction

January 2020-Present

Online Norwegian conversation sessions for around a dozen adult students over two years through both the University of Iowa and the Five College Center for World Languages, beginner through advanced level. In-person supplemental instruction sessions for students taking Norwegian at St. Olaf College. Includes individualized feedback, planning sessions, and providing an immersive Norwegian lesson.

Magnus the Good Research

June 2022-May 2023

Research grant that I applied for and received, alongside another student and faculty member. Conducted research in the field at the Stearns County Museum on heritage Germans and their educational roots. Compiled research based on oral histories found in archives. Advisor for this is Nora Vosburg.

NAHA internships

June 2021-Present

Norwegian-American Historical Association, Digital Repository Project Assistant Intern (summer 2021), Outreach Intern (summer 2022), Archival Assistant (academic years 2021-2022, 2022-2023)

Compiling, researching, and translating the O. E. Rølvaag papers for the purpose of creating a primary source guide for educational settings. Separate primary source guide created for the topic of Norwegian immigration to Texas. Categorization and exploration of primary sources and archival materials. Determining what materials should be used in these projects and making them more accessible to the public. Translating and interpreting old Norwegian writings for modern use. Sorting through historical Norwegian-American correspondence, photographs, and other documents to be entered into the NAHA archives for research purposes. Outreach projects for the archives via social media.

Elementary school teaching assistant

August 2022-January 2023

Assisting in second, third, and fourth grade classrooms at local elementary schools as a part of a field experience component of education courses taken to earn the TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certificate. Helping children with reading and writing, including students with English as a second language. 77 hours completed to date. More info about EDUC 270 on “Other Courses” page.

Cochlear implant user speech therapy sessions

January 2022-December 2022

Working with other students and a faculty member and doing speech pathology exercises with a cochlear implant user and speech therapy patient. Unpaid job, volunteering once weekly.

Rand scholar award research

June 2022-May 2023

Research grant that I applied for and received, meant for projects in the area of Norwegian studies. Developed an independent research project on the topic of Norwegian dialects, which examines these in both a Norwegian and Norwegian-American context. Advisor for this is Nora Vosburg. End result is an extensive report on findings, as well as a public presentation. More info on dedicated page.
