Out of Character: From Japanese Prints to Chinese Calligraphy

This exhibition explores the semantic, aesthetic, as well as poetic significance of Chinese characters as means of public communication and modes of personal expression. Inspired by the Japanese modernist artist Yoshida Hodaka’s prints at the Flaten Museum, this show features works that interpret and integrate the Chinese characters into both traditional and innovative artistic forms. Selected works are displayed in three different locations on campus: The Dittmann Print Study Room, Buntrock Cage Student Gallery, and Tomson Third-Floor Display Case.

This exhibition is curated by the students of Professor Ka Wong’s class ASIAN 268: The Art of Asian Calligraphy, in which students examine the evolution of Chinese characters and the history of Chinese calligraphy, learn about famous calligraphic works and different script writing styles, as well as study the important place that calligraphy holds in Asian culture then and now.
