Meaning &#8220;Explosion,&#8221; Bakuhatsu is an upbeat and loud song our whole club can play at once.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Biscuits<\/strong> \u30d3\u30b9\u30b1\u30c3\u30c8\u3068\u5371\u967a\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Composed by St. Olaf Taiko member Steven Geofrey. Also known as <em>Biscuits and Danger<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>Bisuketto to Kiken<\/em>, Biscuits involves many forms of back and forth playing between drums.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Earthbender <\/strong>\u5c71\u9053\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Composed by St. Olaf Taiko member Amanda Steimle. Earthbender is played with three <em>chu-daiko<\/em>\u00a0players in the middle of the stage. It&#8217;s also known as\u00a0<em>Yamamichi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Firebender<\/strong> \u592a\u967d\u306e\u60c5\u71b1\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Composed by St. Olaf Taiko member Maxyne Leitner. One of our &#8220;Bending&#8221; suite songs. Firebender is intense and complex and utilizes a lot of movements inspired by combat. It is also known as <em>Taiyou no Jounetsu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Hoshizora<\/strong> \u661f\u7a7a <\/span>&#8211; Meaning &#8220;Starry Sky,&#8221; Hoshizora was originally composed by Josh Jackson. In 2026, it was revived by St. Olaf Taiko member Aria Whalen &#8217;26. To us, Hoshizora tells the story of stars dancing across the night sky until the next day&#8217;s sunrise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Jouba<\/strong> \u4e57\u99ac <\/span>&#8211; Jouba, or &#8220;Horse Riding,&#8221; was composed by former St. Olaf Taiko members Steven Geofrey and Scott Grandt, and was inspired by the <em>Legend of Zelda<\/em> games.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Matsuri <\/strong>\u796d\u308a<\/span>&#8211; Meaning &#8220;Festival,&#8221; Matsuri is a traditional taiko song we teach yearly to incoming kohai.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Omiyage <\/strong>\u304a\u571f\u7523\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Originally taught to the club by Joe Mignano of Mu Daiko and written by Shoji Kameda. This song is typically played by senior members of the group as a goodbye song, and is quite difficult to learn. <em>Omiyage<\/em> means &#8220;gift.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Ouichi<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>&#8211;\u00a0<em>The Greatest<\/em>, originally by the Taiko master Kenny Endo. Ouichi involves a lot of movement and is often one of the first songs taught to kohai members.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Raimei <\/strong>\u96f7\u9cf4\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Meaning \u201cThunderstorm&#8221;, Raimei is a St. Olaf Taiko original song composed and choreographed by Oli Lew &#8217;25. The song was written as a thank you gift to St. Olaf Taiko, and was directly inspired by St. Olaf Taiko songs Firebender and Waterbender. Raimei draws inspiration from big band jazz music, referencing the historical link between jazz music and Taiko in the United States. Keep an ear out to hear the different sections of the song combine, as, like a thunderstorm, this song requires multiple elements to truly be complete.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Raku<\/strong> \u697d\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Originally by Shidara Taiko and taught to our club by Mu-Daiko,\u00a0<em>Raku<\/em> has many versions unique to different groups. The name\u00a0<em>raku<\/em> means &#8220;fun&#8221; and this song lives up to its name as a high-energy piece we all play together.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Ry\u016b<\/strong> \u9f8d\u306e\u98df\u4e8b <\/span>&#8211; Formerly known as\u00a0<em>Ry\u016b no Shokuji<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>The Dragon&#8217;s Meal<\/em>, this complex song tells the story of a dragon and has a serious and tense tone.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Waterbender<\/strong> \u9752\u6ce2\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Written by St. Olaf Taiko member Rachel Lamb. Waterbender uses a unique and fluid style of movement as well as many dance elements. It is also known as <em>Aonami.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cb831a;\"><strong>Yuubinkyoku<\/strong> \u90f5\u4fbf\u5c40\u3078\u306e\u65c5\u00a0<\/span>&#8211; Composed by Steven Geofrey. Also known as <em>Yuubinkyoku<\/em> <em>he no Tabi<\/em>, or\u00a0<em>The Journey to the Post Office<\/em>, this was the first original St. Olaf Taiko piece. It tells the story of a St. Olaf student who rushes to the Post Office before it closes so he can retrieve a cake from his mother. This song utilizes the <em>fue<\/em>, or flute. \u00a0We often teach Yuubinkyoku as a first song to incoming kohai.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Lost and Retired Songs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ayame<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<em>Iris<\/em>, an original song composed by St. Olaf Taiko member Olivia James as a thank you to the club&#8217;s original teacher, Iris Shiraishi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Densetsu<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Legend<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Ei Ja Nai Ka <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn&#8217;t it Good? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(colloquial), written by PJ Hirabayashi of San Jose Taiko, is a tribute to early Japanese immigrants and the hard labor they endured working on farms, in the mines, fishing, and on the railroad. It includes singing and dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Journey<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; This mysterious song only exists in the St. Olaf Taiko private archive of videos, as no known public recording of it exists. It was composed by a St. Olaf member early in the club&#8217;s history and notably complex.
