In the evening, Anna Kolesnyk (&#8217;28) will lead an introduction to the Ukrainian language. Finally, on Sunday, March 1, we will screen a Ukrainian film, titled &#8220;Hunt for the Cossack&#8217;s Gold&#8221; (1993). href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/russianstudies\/2026\/02\/01\/the-muslim-in-russian-literature\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"295\">The Muslim in Russian Literature<\/a> and Prof. Morse&#8217;s Intermediate Russian II and WRIT 120e: <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/russianstudies\/2025\/01\/01\/a-real-house-of-dragons-word-world-in-medieval-rus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"44\">Riding and Writing<\/a> braved driving snow and slick roads to attend a film screening and letter writing event at Carleton College.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elena Mityushina, the head of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/raw_minnesota\/\">Russians Against War-MN<\/a>\u201d introduced the film and spoke about political prisoners in Russia and Russian asylum-seekers in MN. We condemn the spurious narratives and outright lies that President Trump and his administration continue to use in their efforts to justify the illegal abduction, detainment, torture, and murder of people regardless of citizenship or legal status. We stand in heartfelt solidarity with our community members who are living in uncertainty, fear, despair, and anger. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six amazing students from Prof. Dossi&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/russianstudies\/2025\/04\/22\/queer-russian-literature\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"143\">Queer Russian Literature<\/a> <\/em>(RUSSN 330) delivered presentations on a variety of queer Russophone authors, some of whom you might not know, but many more that you will want to discover!\u00a0After the panels, Katharina Wiedlack delivered her keynote address, titled &#8220;New Cold War Cultures and Russian Vulnerable Subjects.&#8221; The presentations and keynote were followed by a small reception catered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tastefuldelightscafe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tasteful Delights<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 They &#8220;read&#8221; and discussed the iconostasis, frescoes, icons, and architecture of St. Mary&#8217;s with a generous and knowledgeable member of the lay community.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After visiting St. Mary&#8217;s, the group stopped for lunch at <a href=\"https:\/\/kramarczuks.com\/\">Kramarczuk&#8217;s Deli<\/a> and then traveled to the storage of the Museum of Russian Art to view examples of folk art and a special performance by the folk performance group <a href=\"https:\/\/tmora.org\/education\/nitka\/\">Nitka<\/a>. They will divide their time between civic engagement projects with local NGOs on one hand, and on the other, lectures, discussions and excursions that will address the pressing issues of immigration, displacement, diaspora, and language politics in Latvia and Eastern Europe more generally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course centers community engagement: students will choose to collaborate with a local community partner based on their personal and academic interests. Dossi and Morse traveled to Riga, Latvia and Tallinn, Estonia to conduct a site visit for an exciting new J-Term course. They also conducted research at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansalliskirjasto.fi\/en\">National Library<\/a> in Helsinki, Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-vollkorn-font-family has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Our visit to Riga was engaging, informative, and fun. <a href=\"https:\/\/sras.org\/students\/study-abroad-get-started\/destinations\/study-abroad-in-riga-latvia\/\">SRAS\u2019s Baltics Program<\/a> Manager, Katya, organized our itinerary and put us in touch with potential community partners for our program. We&#8217;re so grateful for her guidance and look forward to working together in the future.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Tallinn, Prof. Morse attended a mass at the Transfiguration cathedral, which houses an exquisite early 18th c. <a href=\"https:\/\/register.muinas.ee\/public.php?menuID=monument&amp;action=view&amp;id=1526\">baroque iconostasis<\/a>. Profs. Dossi and Morse also enjoyed exploring the old town and the Maritime Museum with their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, in Helsinki, Profs. Dossi and Morse worked in the National Library. Prof. Dossi examined the extensive collection of nineteenth-century Russian medical journals in the Slavonic Library, while Prof. Morse examined texts from the private libraries of three influential
