When researching my first essay on Durey, this issue was particularly noticeable. Finding resources on a composer mostly known for being unknown was hard enough before considering almost every single scholarly resource on the man was written in French. My second essay was a touch easier, as the Concerts Colonne at least performed abroad and was well known for being a uniquely innovative orchestra.

I have again run into the French problem for essay no. 2. Finding reviews of French music that was premiered in France and written for French newspapers not written in French is, well, impossible. I suppose I am luckier than most, though, as Le Bestiaire is a fairly well known work for solo voice (I was introduced to it during Laura’s junior recital last spring). It is still often performed, so modern reviews exist all over, and there are several scholarly essays analyzing the work. If only they would’ve included the premier date!

Interestingly, working on essay three again pointed me towards my now dear friend, Louis Durey. At the same time that Poulenc was setting a selection of poems from Le Bestiaire, Durey was setting the entirety of Apollonaire’s Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d’Orphée. When Poulenc discovered this, he dedicated his version to Durey. This connection saved me a small amount of research time, and gave me a useful connection to use in my final essay to really tie it to the time period I was writing from.

Who would’ve thought that a class on music in Paris would require looking at so many French texts? /sarcasm/ For how much I enjoy singing it, boy do I not understand a lick of French (curse me for taking Latin in Highschool before deciding to learn another useless language [Norwegian] in college).
