Knowing Jutta, Disibodenberg, and God

Date: 1118

I don’t need much, nor have I received much education here besides the callings that bring me closer to God. We are strictly enclosed here which allows for more time for prayer and devotion to God. Because of that I don’t have much to say about Jutta except that she is clearly graced by God. I admire her lack of rest in vigils, fasting, and other good works and do work to emulate that devotion to God. I have made my formal profession of virginity and will continue to desire nothing.

What I have learned:

  • Don’t converse to much at the window, and when conversing never get too lively
  • Avoid noble visitors, wear a facial veil (don’t trust men)
  • Don’t send or receive letters or presents (don’t trust men)
  • Fast regularly as to not risk chastity
  • Desire nothing of the flesh (don’t trust men)

I’m not sure I agree with this severe self discipline I have learned in my years here- which has gotten me into some trouble, but the pressure of this discipline is unbearable. I do know that virginity is the best way to devote myself to God. As I remain chaste I triumph over the Devil.1
