Bibliographic Citation Formats

Bibliographic Citation Formats (for scores of various types):

Few good resources exist for consistent bibliographic citation of scores; I’ve summarized here the standard formatting based on Turabian. Please follow these formats throughout the project. I’ll add bibliographic formatting for primary and secondary literature, as we progress through the project phases.

For other types of citations (books, articles, etc.), consult Halvorson’s Turabian Guide.

SCORE CITATION:

Manuscripts and Primary Score Sources:

Composer Last Name, Composer First Name. Work Title. Source type, Year of Composition. Holding Institution, Call Number.

*If possible, identify the Holding Institution (where, or in what archive/library, does the work currently exist?) and Call Number (often written on the manuscript in pencil, or listed in the holding institution’s catalogue). This information can be difficult to find, so let me know if you have problems.

Example:

Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus. Piano Concerto in A Major, KV. 488. Autograph Manuscript, n.d. [1786]. Bibliothèque du Conservatoire de Musique Paris, Ms. 226.

*n.d. = no date (undated manuscript; scholars have approximated a generally accepted date from other sources]

*Holding Institution: Bibliothèque du Conservatoire de Musique Paris (Library of the Paris Conservatory of Music)

*Call Number: Ms. 226
