Stop 1:\u00a0This building is located in the Zhongzheng-qu or Zhongzheng District (<\/span>\u4e2d\u6b63\u533a\/\u4e2d\u6b63\u5340) <\/span>of Taipei, which is named for President Chiang Kai-shek. The building was constructed during the period of Japanese rule but was converted once Chiang\u2019s party took authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think \u201cmachi\u201d and \u201ccho\u201d are interchangeable (both mean \u2018town\u2019) and are used in the Japanese system of identifying addresses, similar to “qu” in Mandarin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the Japanese district name Bumbu-machi \u6587\u6b66\u753a is different from the Mandarin one, it was from a Chinese street name during the Qing period: \u6587\u6b66\u5e99\u8857\/\u6587\u6b66\u5edf\u8857, which means “Street of the Temple of Cultural Deity (Confucius) and the Temple of the Martial Deity (Lord Guan).”<\/p>\n

This is a good example of “palimpsest,” a single place that reveals the traces from multiple periods of time.<\/p>\n

Maruyama \u5706\u5c71 in Japanese, or Yuanshan \u5706\u5c71 in Mandarin, was a park in Taipei with shrines and other sites nearby. We suspect the\u00a0translator chose Maruyama rather than Yuanshan\u00a0to emphasize the place’s connection to the demolished Shinto shrines, perhaps because that is what was there when the\u00a0narrator’s\u00a0was young.<\/p>\n

The Grand Hotel was established in 1952, built on the site of the Grand Shrine (Shintoism). It was designed possibly as a way of impressing foreign dignitaries (particularly those from the West), as a symbol of Taiwanese power and wealth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is Seimon-cho spelled in Japanese rather than pinyin? Because:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. She is now traveling in Taipei playing the role of a Japanese tourist (Japanese identity)<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The market is designed by a Japanese (Japanese legacy)<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The area is more Japanese influenced (Japanese culture\uff09<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Jieshou \u4ecb\u5bff means “longevity of Chiang Kai-shek” (Jie is the Mandarin pronunciation\u00a0of Kai as in Chiang Kai-shek \u848b\u4ecb\u77f3), named in honor of, or course, Chiang. Kaidegelan is an\u00a0aboriginal group, named in honor of the aboriginal group of Taipei. Bu\u00a0negating both names of the same road, the narrator seems to show her disapproval of “politically correct” names over time.<\/p>\n

    What the narrator acknowledges is Tomon-cho, a Japanese name of the road between the East Gate (\u4e1c\u95e8\/\u6771\u9580 Tomon in Japanese, Dongmen in Mandarin) and the Presidential Office. Why? It is also very likely\u00a0because her Japanese identity:\u00a0She is now traveling in Taipei playing the role of a Japanese tourist.<\/p>\n
