“\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b\u5c9b” . “A land with no master; an island with no chance encounter”. “\u4e4b\u201c is the classic Chinese and it can be simplified as \u201c\u7684\u201d which means \u201cof\u201d or “with” in English. We agree that the English translation is direct and neat. It captures the basic meaning of this sentence. However, the English text uses “chance encounter” to explain “\u7f18\u201c, where the original meaning is “fate” or “karma”. It is also noteworthy that even though “\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b<\/span>\u5730<\/span><\/i>\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b<\/span>\u5c9b<\/span><\/i>“, in direct translation, means the <\/span>places<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>\u5730, \u5c9b<\/span><\/i>) that we are unable to reach, in the original text, the author uses the sentence to refer to the lost youth (like age of sixteen, seventeen), and good times that we can never return to. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here we find some variations of \u00a0“\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b\u5c9b”. They all have similarities or discrepancy on format or meanings of “\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b\u5c9b”. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u5a46\u5a11<\/span>\u4e4b<\/span>\u6d0b\uff0c\u7f8e\u4e3d\u4e4b\u5c9b. “A shimmering ocean; a beautiful island”. This is the most obvious variation that has the exactly same format as \u00a0“\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b\u5c9b”. \u00a0The author actually mentions the sentence twice in the book, and here we are going to talk about the first time it appears in the text. <\/span><\/p>\n

The tone of “<\/span>\u5a46\u5a11<\/span>\u4e4b\u6d0b<\/span>\uff0c\u7f8e\u4e3d\u4e4b\u5c9b” is relatively positive. It praises the beauty and fertility of the island (Taiwan). Although the English translation gets the basic idea, it does not show the “<\/span>movement<\/span><\/i>” indicated in the original text: “<\/span>\u5a46\u5a11”, in Chinese, creates a sense of movement – like dancing, whirling. The original Chinese format and the word choice (eg. <\/span>“<\/span>\u5a46\u5a11”, \u201c<\/span>\u6d0b\u201d)<\/span> also delivers a dreamy and romantic feeling that the English translation does not quite deliver.<\/span><\/p>\n

[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle admin_label=”Toggle” title=”Variation Two Analysis” open=”on” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]<\/p>\n

The second \u201c<\/span>\u5a46\u5a11<\/span>\u4e4b\u6d0b<\/span>\uff0c\u7f8e\u4e3d\u4e4b\u5c9b\u201d is the last sentence of the book. It has the same meaning as the previous one but indicates different things because of the different context. The previous one refer to an real existing island – Taiwan. But here, it refers to an imaginary island. \u00a0It form a sharp contrast with “floating corpse”, “belched dark smoke”, “wild dog”, “high-pitched sounds of a funeral song” and so on which are indicating in the previous paragraph. The imagination is beautiful, but the reality is cruel. <\/span><\/p>\n

“\u53ef\u618e\u7684\u7eff\uff0c\u6e7f\u6ed1\u7684\u57ce” has the similar format as the “\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b\u5c9b” ( XX’s XX). However, “\u53ef\u618e\u7684\u7eff\uff0c\u6e7f\u6ed1\u7684\u57ce” gives a gloomy and clammy feeling, while the tone of “\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b\u5c9b” is relatively neutral. Like the other variations, the English translation is direct and simple (simply translating every single word); the word choice (“digesting”, “<\/span>slippery damp”) does well convey both the meaning and feeling of the original text.<\/span><\/p>\n

The meaning of \u201c\u957f\u5d0e\u306e\u60c5\u8c03\uff0c\u9e7f\u513f\u5c9b\u306e\u98ce\u5149\u201d \u00a0is the ambience of Nagasaki, the scenery of Kagoshima. We can see that the format of this sentence is same as “\u65e0\u4e3b\u4e4b\u5730\uff0c\u65e0\u7f18\u4e4b\u5c9b”, which is also like XX\u7684XX. \u201c\u306e\u201d is a Japanese word also means \u201c\u7684\u201c in Chinese and \u201cof \u201d in english. Unlike “\u53ef\u618e\u7684\u7eff\uff0c\u6e7f\u6ed1\u7684\u57ce”, the tone of \u201c\u957f\u5d0e\u306e\u60c5\u8c03\uff0c\u9e7f\u513f\u5c9b\u306e\u98ce\u5149\u201d is more positive. The words \u201c\u60c5\u8c03\u201d and \u201c\u98ce\u5149\u201d give the senses of delightfulness and easiness. However, the English translation is quite mediocre and dull that does not capture the positive feelings of the original text. <\/span><\/p>\n
