They show the narrator\u2019s longing to be with A and experience the city with her as she once had. <\/span>Not only is the material in the quotations significant, but the places from which the quotes were selected is important.<\/span> The quotes are unfamiliar to readers because there is no context behind them. However, in the story of the narrator, they become to have meanings. “St. Mark\u2019s Square” in quotation reveals the narrator’s loneliness without A; \u201cSnowfall\u201d in quotations injected in the middle of the story reveals the changing relationship climate between the narrator and A; \u201c<\/span>The aging Governor-General had a pair of ancient eyes\u201d<\/span><\/i> represents the narrator\u2019s personal feelings and thoughts about Taiwan that had undergone changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

      There are several layers of this sentence: <\/span><\/p>\n

      The narrator first mentioned the building as \u201cold and decrepit\u201d, because Taiwan is developing fast over the past few decades. Although the building was built only 40 years ago, it is already out-of-date\u00a0and has a strong contradiction comparing to the surrounding new buildings. <\/span><\/p>\n

      The Governor-General\u2019s Office was actually built by the Japanese government during WWII, but the narrator mentions that sometimes people<\/span> assumed the building had been built by the Nationalist government. This reflects that people are not willing to trace back to the tragic history that Taiwan was once dominated by Japan and bombed by the U.S. Because this part of the history is not often mentioned, people start to misunderstand it or intentionally misremember it in a better way.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Variation 2:<\/span><\/p>\n

      The narrator reminisces of a time when apartment buildings and roads didn\u2019t foul the city\u2019s natural landscape. By interjecting a quote describing an aging Governor with ancient eyes, it reinforces the idea that the narrator sees the city as it once was but many people do not anymore. Ancient eyes can look back through time and see a place before it has changed.<\/span><\/p>\n
