{"id":10,"date":"2015-04-20T14:01:01","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T19:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/mohl\/?p=10"},"modified":"2015-07-12T12:06:17","modified_gmt":"2015-07-12T17:06:17","slug":"2015-middle-school-science-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/mohl\/2015\/04\/20\/2015-middle-school-science-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"2015 Middle School Science Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Limited space available for 6th grade physical science teachers only&#8230;\u00a0APPLY BELOW!<\/span><\/h2>\n<h1><strong>Integrating Best Practices in Middle School Science<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>At St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>August 18-21, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will offer interactive sessions that let you explore and practice best practices in middle school science teaching, with a focus on engaging all students, science literacy, and teaching around authentic science problems.\u00a0 You will work together with other middle school science teachers in your field to develop and refine teaching materials that will help you implement new practices in your teaching about a specific topic or standard.\u00a0 We have modest funds available to support purchase of supplies that you may\u00a0need to implement your plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We encourage groups of teachers from across grade-levels within the same school or district to apply.<\/strong>\u00a0 Teachers will receive a\u00a0<strong>$300 stipend<\/strong>\u00a0as compensation for their time, with up to $100 additional stipend available for participation in follow up events\/reflections in October and during the spring.\u00a0 For teachers who live more than 50 miles from St. Olaf College, we have some funds available to reimburse travel and lodging expenses.<\/p>\n<h1>Tentative Schedule<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>August 18<\/strong> (half day):\u00a0 Lunch. Introductions and Curriculum Team Formation. Rotate through a selection of introductory workshops*.\u00a0 Reflection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 19<\/strong>: School Team Goal Setting. Curriculum Team Work Time. Lunch. Interactive workshop:\u00a0Engaging students in expressing science literacy. Reflection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 20<\/strong>: Group Check Ins.\u00a0 Curriculum Team Work Time.\u00a0 Lunch. Interactive Workshop: &#8220;Authentic&#8221; science and engineering projects to motivate learning.\u00a0 Reflection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 21<\/strong> (half day): Presentations and feedback. Revisions, Supplies, and Next Steps.\u00a0 Lunch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>*Introductory\u00a0Workshop topics to be determined based on participant interest. \u00a0Possible choices include: Using WIDA standards to differentiate lesson plans,\u00a0Incorporating Universal Design into teaching,\u00a0Incorporating close reading into science classes,\u00a0Using learning cycles to plan science instruction, Identifying essential questions and anchoring events to motivate a unit,\u00a0Using models to teach about the nature of science and engineering, Using the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards to plan instruction.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This workshop is supported by a grant from HHMI to St. Olaf College. \u00a0We offered a similar workshop in 2014. \u00a0Participants appreciated the opportunity to learn and collaborate with colleagues.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I very much enjoyed this workshop. I liked having the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from my school district as well as grade-specific colleagues from other districts. I also liked that the workshop was specific to the middle school. I feel that the presentations were geared to everyone in the group, not just one specific discipline.
