Hung in private homes and on public streets, these objects embodied the social and cultural preoccupations of a rapidly changing country. From a contemporary perspective, mixed messages abound as text and image, and tradition and innovation intersect.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>Throughout the exhibition, text and image send different messages and images seem at odds with historical fact. Together, the works in this exhibition illuminate China\u2019s transition from Confucianism to Communism to Consumerism and bring the viewer closer to understanding China in the twenty-first century.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Printed material saturated China throughout the twentieth century.
