{"id":132,"date":"2013-02-04T18:47:36","date_gmt":"2013-02-05T00:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/medinavi\/?p=132"},"modified":"2013-02-05T00:18:03","modified_gmt":"2013-02-05T06:18:03","slug":"span-231","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/medinavi\/2013\/02\/04\/span-231\/","title":{"rendered":"SPAN 231: Intermediate Spanish I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2012\/08\/n903825553_5599973_4668.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4 alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2012\/08\/n903825553_5599973_4668-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/medinavi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2012\/08\/n903825553_5599973_4668-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/medinavi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2012\/08\/n903825553_5599973_4668-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/medinavi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2012\/08\/n903825553_5599973_4668-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/medinavi\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2012\/08\/n903825553_5599973_4668.jpg 604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Fall 2012<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Intercultural Connections: The U.S. and the Spanish-Speaking World in a Global Community\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Spanish 231 explores the material and human diversity of the Spanish-speaking world and highlights important connections among the United States, the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America, and Spain.\u00a0 Whereas in Spanish 111 and 112 students learn the basic vocabulary and grammar to talk about themselves and their lives, in Spanish 231 students use their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">learn content through their second language<\/span>.\u00a0 The course has four major cultural themes that help students develop a new perspective on the Spanish-speaking World and its relationship to the U.S.:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Intercultural Connections: The U.S. and the Spanish-Speaking World in a Global Community<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Material and Human Diversity in Latin America<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Material and Human Diversity in Spain<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Images of the Spanish-Speaking World: From the \u201cBig Picture\u201d (<i>Datos<\/i>) to (the Lives of) Individuals<\/p>\n<p>(<i>Retratos<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>A review of selected Spanish grammar concepts (<i>ser<\/i> versus <i>estar<\/i>;
