custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|||&#8221; text_font_size_tablet=&#8221;16px&#8221; text_font_size_phone=&#8221;18px&#8221; text_font_size_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-secondary-color%22:%91%22link_text_color%22%93}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ruta Kramins was born on September 22, 1930 in Rezkne, Latvia.<a href=\"#fn\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There she lived with her father Reverend Friedrichs Kramins, her mother Valda Kramins, and her siblings, younger sister Ilga and younger brother Andris Kramins.<a href=\"#fn\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When the Red Army started to advance into Latvia, the Kramins family fled south and west into Germany.<a href=\"#fn\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a time they lived in a Displaced Persons (DP) camp in N\u00fcrnburg in southern Germany, before moving again in 1947 to the DP camp right outside of Berchtesgaden, called \u201cInsula\u201d, or island, by the Latvian DPs who lived there.<a href=\"#fn\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At Insula Reverend Kramins became employed by the Lutheran World Federation, working as the Housefather for the Berchtesgaden DP camp Lutheran Study Center. Ruta was able to complete her high school education and gain a IRO professional certificate in technical drawing before coming to the United States.<a href=\"#fn\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> In 1950, with assistance from the Lutheran World Federation, the family immigrated to the United States, landing in Grafton, North Dakota.<a href=\"#fn\"><sup>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But Ruta did not stay in Grafton long, for she was accepted to attend St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.<a href=\"#fn\"><sup>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=&#8221;1_2,1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.7&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;|auto|0px|auto|false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/lwf-refugee-service\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1702\/2026\/06\/Screenshot-2026-06-25-142805.jpg&#8221; alt=&#8221;%22Try and Stop This%22 theater production credits. _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;1.8em&#8221; link_text_color=&#8221;gcid-secondary-color&#8221; link_font_size=&#8221;13px&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-secondary-color%22:%91%22link_text_color%22%93}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Ruta joined St. Olaf College in the 1950-1951 academic year to continue her education.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> She was an active member of the St. Olaf community, having joined the IRC Club and the Zeta Chi Omega academic honor society, and taking part in the evening dormitory devotion.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Graduating with the class of 1952, Ruta proved to be an accomplished student.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span><a href=\"#fn\">\u00a0<\/a>An article from the St. Olaf Messenger named Ruta as one of seven individuals who received various scholarships.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ruta was offered a laboratory assistantship at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she eventually completed a PhD in chemistry.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> There she met her husband, Robert Bly, who was also working on his PhD in chemistry.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Once they graduated, they ultimately took faculty positions in the chemistry and biochemistry department of South Carolina University.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> During their time together Ruta and Robert travelled and published various research papers on their scientific work.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ruta retired from her faculty position in 2002.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> The pair continued to travel and patronize music until Robert Bly\u2019s death on January 27, 2021.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#fn\"><sup>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> In her path from displaced person, to St. Olaf student, to PhD and faculty member in chemistry, Ruta Kramins Bly is among the alumnae to establish St. Olaf&#8217;s legacy of Women in STEM (Instagram: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stolafwstem\/\">@stolafwstem<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/lwf-refugee-service\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1702\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-01-092141.jpg&#8221;
