My most recent book (Fortress Press, December 2017) is:
A Documentary History of Lutheranism
Volume one covers the chronological period from Luther’s first calls for reform to the development of Lutheran Orthodoxy and Pietism during the seventeenth century. Volume two (with Mark Granquist as co-editor) analyzes the evolution of post-Enlightenment Lutheranism as it spread to all the regions of the world. Many of the primary source texts are translated into English here for the first time. Each chapter begins with an essay that provides additional historical background and offers contextual integration for the following primary source selections. Some chapters focus on developments in thought, others on descriptions of historical events or the evolution of religious institutions
Seventeenth Century Lutheran Meditations and Hymns in the Classics of Western Spirituality series. (Paulist Press, 2011) includes the full text of Gerhard’s Sacred Meditations (newly translated from Latin), excerpts from the practical spiritual writings of Heinrich Muller and Christian Scriver (originally written in German) as well as a selection of seventeenth century Lutheran hymns.
