Artist bio:

Bassano, Leandro de Ponte (1557-1622). This artist created this panting around 1578 in Italy. The medium for this work is Canvas ( 1.52m x 2.14m ). The painting is currently on display in the louvre in Paris, France.

Leandro was a child of four, all of whom were artists under their father. His father, Jacopo, ran a business selling paintings. However, they didn’t really catch much attention because all of the sons were told to recreate their father’s paintings. After the children grew up they began to create their own paintings. Surprised at how talented his children had become at painting, Jacopo, boasted about them to others showing their works. Although Jacopo began the business, his children were the ones to bring it success in 1588. What’s also surprising is that Leandro created Les Noces de Cana around 1578. At least ten years before his talents were recognized. 1575 was when Leandro first started painting biblical and pastoral paintings. He did this because he saw the popularity they attracted. Later, Leandro became a portraitist and was even awarded ennoblement in 1595.

Comments and Connections

I found Bassano’s Les Noces de Cana simply because the title says “the wedding at Cana”. However, I decided to select this image because of the unusual depiction it presents. All other significant portraits for the wedding at Cana, present a sense of significance to the moment taking place. Whereas, in Le Noces de Cana, we see men sleeping strewn across the room. The painting almost needs to be looked at by those who are familiar with the wedding at Cana. Otherwise, they would see it with less value. It gives off a good image for what the after effect of the wedding would have been. Not so glorious, but rather normal and distasteful when compared to the glory that Christian art should show of Christ’s miracles.
