Since there are extreme changes between the 4 seasons, and since our weather can be unpredictable, weather is a big part of daily life on the hill. Here\u2019s what you need to know about each season:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b style=\"color: #33cccc;\">Summer (June through August)<\/b><\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 515px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ctcl.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/stolaf-11.jpg\" width=\"505\" height=\"334\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Average temperature range: 58-85 \u00b0F (14-29\u00b0C)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota is beautiful in the summertime, and can get very warm and humid. When you first arrive in August it will be hot and humid, so if you don\u2019t have a fan in your room, try to keep your window curtains closed during the day to keep out the sun. At night, open them to cool your room. Also be sure to put on\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #000000;\">sunscreen\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and\u00a0<\/span><b style=\"color: #000000;\">mosquito repellent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0if you plan to be outside for a long time, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><b>Fall\/ Autumn (September through November)\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/stolafadmissions.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/fall2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"258\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Average temperature range: 40-70 \u00b0F (4-22 \u00b0C)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You won\u2019t have to worry about the heat for too long as fall is quickly approaching in the month of September. The best way to describe the fall weather is \u201cit&#8217;s not too hot and not too cold\u201d. During this time, the trees bloom and change color so many students take advantage of the beautiful scenery by going on walks and hanging out on the campus lawn. The football team is also playing for the fall season so many students go out on Saturday to support the guys when they\u2019re playing at home and enjoy the nice weather.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some fall essentials:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T-shirts\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shorts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweatshirts\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light jackets\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bug spray\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Raincoat or Umbrella<br \/>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><b>Winter (November through March)\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/HollandWinter485x315.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Average temperature range: -5 -40\u00b0F (-20 \u2013 5\u00b0C)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re from a tropical country, winter in Minnesota is going to be an experience to say the least. It is important to be prepared for this season due to how low temperatures drop. During this season, expect heavy winds, snow, and rain. During the semester, most teachers almost never cancel class when it is snowing, so it is important to have the proper clothing items to walk through the snow. Layers are very important! Layering clothing allows you to be warm underneath your jacket.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our buildings however are heated, so you will stay warm inside. Also, the air can be very dry in the winter, so putting on <\/span><b>lotion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>lip balm <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will keep your skin from getting chapped and uncomfortable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some winter essentials:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boots\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scarf\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter coats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hand mittens\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweaters\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socks\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No need to worry about how you are going to purchase these items! During the month of October, the Taylor Center provides an opportunity to go off campus to purchase these items. Some signs and symptoms of SAD includes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having low energy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty concentrating\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping difficulties\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling sad or lonely\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During winter, some students may experience SAD. However, there are a lot of resources on campus to help you during this time. You can reach out to your counselor, talk to your friends, or the wellness center on campus. During the spring months, you will typically start to experience warmer weather. However, during my freshman year, due to different environmental factors, the warm days were few. It was late April and it was still a little cold outside with a lot of rain and the trees were still not blooming as they typically would in early March. Expect the unexpected when it comes to the weather in Minnesota. One day it was 68\u00b0F, then I woke up the next day and it was snowing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a typical spring season, it is a great time to hang around on the campus lawn and cherish your last moments with your friends as the semester is winding down and summer break is around the corner where some students may return home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><b>Daylight Saving Time<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The U.S. is one of the countries that practices Daylight Saving Time (DST), which means that we set clocks forward an hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall. Keep this practice in mind, because it will happen during the school semester. Don\u2019t worry, though: smart phones and computers set to the U.S. time zone will automatically do this for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Dates: <\/b>Sunday, November 6, 2022 &amp; Sunday, March 12, 2023<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Remember this saying for changing your clock for DST: &#8220;Fall back (set clock back 1 hour) &amp; Spring Forward (set clock ahead 1 hour)&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2676\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/internationalstudents\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/357\/2017\/06\/time-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><b>Severe Weather &amp; Emergencies<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota is located in an area where tornadoes and other types of severe weather can occur. You will hear a siren every first Wednesday of the month, which is a test of the emergency warning system in Northfield &#8212; don\u2019t panic! However, if you do hear that alarm on a different day, it is probably a warning to take shelter.
