Grayson Chan’s musical journey began in his childhood, deeply influenced by his faith and his roots in the Salvation Army church in Hong Kong. Now a Music and Studio Arts student at St. Olaf College, Grayson has honed his craft as a euphonium player, channeling his love for music into praising and worshiping God. At just 10 years old, he began learning hymns by ear, sparking a passion that grew under the mentorship of the Hong Kong government’s Music Office and Salvation Army brass bands. This foundation led to remarkable achievements, such as becoming the principal euphonium of the Music Office Youth Brass Band and performing in masterclasses with renowned euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead at age 15.

Grayson’s music bridges cultures and communities. During an exchange year in Switzerland, he played with local Salvation Army brass bands, sharing his heritage while learning new traditions. As a member of the St. Olaf Band, he has traveled internationally, performing most recently in Japan, where he experienced the universal power of music to connect people. Dr. Timothy Mahr, professor emeritus and former director of the St. Olaf Band, describes Grayson as a passionate and dedicated musician, known for his dynamic performances and relentless pursuit of excellence.

Currently serving as the principal euphonium of the St. Olaf Band, Grayson combines technical skill with heartfelt emotion to inspire audiences and fellow musicians. Whether performing in ensembles, exploring the connections between music and art, or sharing his faith through his unique sound, Grayson remains devoted to his mission: glorifying God through music. With every performance, he strives to connect cultures and inspire others through his craft.
