{"id":324,"date":"2018-01-18T07:35:28","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T13:35:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/esj-2018\/?p=324"},"modified":"2018-01-18T07:35:28","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T13:35:28","slug":"food-the-thread-that-unites-us-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/esj-2018\/2018\/01\/18\/food-the-thread-that-unites-us-all\/","title":{"rendered":"Food: The Thread That Unites Us All"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>There is no sincerer love than the love of food\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>-George Bernard Shaw\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At ARI, everything is done together. \u00a0Morning exercises, cleaning, and farm work are all performed as a team, building a sense of community, togetherness, and friendship. \u00a0Gathering people from all across the globe, ARI brings together a melting pot of different cultures, languages, and personalities. \u00a0Although our differences may be great, there is always a single thread that unites us all: food. \u00a0Regardless of religion, ethnicity, or gender, food is something that everyone can relate to. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just like everything else at ARI, food is a community driven activity through all of its phases. \u00a0From farm to table, no piece of the puzzle is fitted by a single hand. \u00a0When it comes to finally preparing the food, the sense of community and passion shines bright. \u00a0A small group of volunteers utilizes the food that other members have harvested, and creates a meal for the entire community. \u00a0No one cooks for themselves, everyone cooks for everyone. \u00a0It is not uncommon for the chefs to be the last ones to eat; while the other members of the community are rewarded for their hard work, cooking volunteers often stay behind to finish cleaning the kitchen. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The theme of self-sacrifice for others is another pillar of ARI. \u00a0Even when cooking volunteers are divided up into small groups in the kitchen to work on different dishes, the sense of community remains. \u00a0Everyone helps everyone. \u00a0If some members finish their task first, they immediately redirect themselves to help out another member of the kitchen. \u00a0One incident of self-sacrifice that comes to my mind is Achivo-San. \u00a0On our second to last night in the kitchen, we were rife with ambition and decided to make sushi. \u00a0Without much prior planning, we dove in head first. \u00a0Unbeknownst to us, we did not have enough nori to make enough sushi for the entire community!
