Below, I have written a haiku, a form of short poetry originally from Japan that follows a 3 line pattern with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third. It is reflective of my discussion with 5 of my peers at St. Olaf and is a call to action for creative placemaking – the strengthening of our campus community through the arts. Please enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Haiku for Creative Placemaking<\/strong><\/p>\n

For every new face,<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Olaf has a place to\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Engage with the arts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The dance department<\/span><\/p>\n

Is a tool to become more<\/span><\/p>\n

Culturally versed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

While studio art<\/span><\/p>\n

And its many forms leaves you<\/span><\/p>\n

Thoroughly emersed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Photography is<\/span><\/p>\n

Vulnerable, it provokes\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and even disgusts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

So, this campus must<\/span><\/p>\n

Embrace everyone to form<\/span><\/p>\n

Creative trusts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

You want to hear more?<\/span><\/p>\n

Music is available<\/span><\/p>\n

For all to explore.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Diverse arrays of\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

cultural identities<\/span><\/p>\n

Are voiced through the scores.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Once traditional\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And Eurocentric, Nordic\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heritage was rife.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Now, BIPOC and female<\/span><\/p>\n

Composers set out to share<\/span><\/p>\n

Their voices and strife.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For pupils that care,<\/span><\/p>\n

Learned instructors are there,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To fulfill your needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The arts can create<\/span><\/p>\n

A welco<\/span>ming space for\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dialogue and deeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

From music to film,<\/span><\/p>\n

To dance and photography;<\/span><\/p>\n

The arts produce leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

But one must be present,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Use their aptitudes and strengths,<\/span><\/p>\n

And work together.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Creativity<\/span><\/p>\n

Can help our community\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspire social change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Support all the arts<\/span><\/p>\n

For they will make us happy,<\/span><\/p>\n

Keep us from derange.<\/span><\/p>\n

Talent fills the air,<\/span><\/p>\n

Clever people everywhere,<\/span><\/p>\n
