My name is Elijah Leer and I am experiencing a state of general wonder here in Washington D.C. For introduction purposes, I’m a sophomore, I’m studying music education, and one day, I hope to direct pit orchestras for stage musicals! For now, I am focusing on directing high school choir classrooms. On campus, I sing in the Chapel Choir, play the piano, and finish last in the intramural standings, no matter the sport.

I applied to this particular interim course primarily because of its relevance to my elected major. I believe that music education encompasses all aspects of musical learning and outreach, not just classroom settings, and so the opportunity to promote and lobby for federal arts programs of any kind was especially exciting. The program will no doubt expand my appreciation for such programs outside of the classroom, and I can’t wait to get started.

I like to think of myself as a valuable asset to the student group because of my comprehensive two days of experience in the District of Columbia, about a decade ago. At the ripe age of ten, convinced that I would grow up to be Barack Obama, I convinced my parents to work the capitol into our family vacation. My memory of the experience is hazy, but I can only assume that I’m now an expert. I plan to delight my classmates with a constant bombardment of unrelated civics facts. They will love this.

Joking aside, I am so excited to be here. In the 24 hours since our arrival, I’ve been astounded by the sights, the history, and the sheer knowledge contained in this city. This morning’s near-death experience in the closing doors of the metro can’t even dampen my spirits.
