Thompson was one of the leading Presbyterian missionaries in Japan, arriving in 1863. Thompson knew Japanese and taught English and biblical studies, including a teaching position at Tsukiji Daigaku. He worked with James Curtis Hepburn on a translation of the Gospel of Matthew, and translated the Book of Genesis on his own. Following internal conflict amongst the Presbyterian missionaries in 1873, Thompson left the mission and established his own church, the Church of Christ in Japan, in opposition to Hepburn’s Presbyterian church. Thompson also worked as an interpreter at the American legation. In 1874 Thompson married missionary Mary Parke, one of the founders of Joshi Gakuin alongside Julia Carrothers and Kate Youngman, and they had three daughters. According to Sharf, Thompson and Hasegawa’s friendship and work together was important at the start, but later gave way to the academic community around Tokyo Imperial University.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”–et_global_heading_font||||||||” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

List of Translated Works

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_filterable_portfolio fullwidth=”off” include_categories=”12″ _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” title_font=”–et_global_heading_font|600|||||||” title_font_size=”15px” hover_enabled=”0″ db_tab_order=”reverse” db_project_order=”by_id” db_project_order_ids=”187, 200, 202, 204, 1418, 206, 208″ global_colors_info=”{}” hover_icon=”||fa||900″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_filterable_portfolio][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

David Thompson was an early fairy tale translator/writer for Hasegawa.
