In the mountains of Oyeyama there lived a group of ogres led by Shutendoji. They would pass through Rashomon gate to enter Kyoto and terrorize all the families of the land. There also lived in Kyoto a brave warrior named Minamoto-no-Raiko. He had four followers, the bravest named Tsuna. They all lived together in times of war and peace in Raiko's castle. One peaceful night, Tsuna complained that times were boring, and he missed fighting. One of the followers told him about the ogres, but Tsuna laughed and said they were nothing but old wives' stories. His companions said if he was sure there were no ogres, he should go to Rashomon gate alone and keep watch. Tsuna agreed, and took the notice board from the castle with him, intending to leave it Rashomon to prove he went. He departed on horseback, and that night was dark and rainy, and it was nearly impossible to see ahead of him. As dawn came, a hand appeared from the roof of the gate and grabbed Tsuna. It was the strong and ugly Shutendoji. Tsuna was too shocked to think, and immediately began to fight with him despite being no match for his strength. He found an opening and cut Shutendoji's arm off, causing him to flee. Tsuna returned with the arm to the castle, and the next morning he visited the famous wizard Seimei with his friends. Seimei told him to place the arm in a chest and keep watch for seven days, alone, fasting and praying. If he failed to do this misfortune would come. He followed this advice, but at the end of the seven days his old aunt came to the gate. She begged to come in, as she was proud of his victory and wanted to visit. Tsuna let her in, and when she entered she asked to see the arm. When Tsuna refused she began to cry. This made him feel bad, and he let her look. As soon as he opened the lid, his aunt transformed into Shutendoji and stole back the arm and vanished. Tsuna ran out, but did not see him anywhere. He sadly reported to Raiko what had happened, and they all vowed to destroy the ogres one day, or die trying.
