In the book “Courier” as oppose to the film instead of an episode, when Ivan and his mother are singing together a song “Grass by the house” (“Trava u Doma”) by the popular Soviet rock band “Zemlyane”

there is a scene where Ivan is listening some music on a tape recorder and imagines himself a famous pop singer. Because of the loud music Ivan’s neighbours are knocking at his door to complain.

– Hello, – said Ivan.

-Look at the child, – seriously demanded Nekiforov.

– What’s the matter? – inquired Ivan after having thoroughly examined the baby.

– You don’t notice anything? – Asked Nikiforov. Ivan looked at the child for the second time and not having found any noteworthy defects, shrug his shoulders.

– Seems alright.

– So-o! – said Nekiforov and, shook the child, – It’s ok, dear, it’s ok… So? – he replied again referring to Ivan. – His head is twitching — is it also alright? Yes? Because of your music the child is growing not normal! Is it alright?

– Why are you explaining to him? He is shameless! – Shouted Nekiforov’s wife, when she ran into the staircase, and grabbed the child from her husband. – It’s ok, baby! – she started talking while swinging the child, – we’ll find justice against him! We’ll call militia!… We will!…

The baby, being probably moved by everyone’s attention, indeed started crying.

– Here! – exclaimed Nekiforov. – Here! You see what you did to the child? Look, took the fashion – turn on the stereo to the full. What will now grow out of him, if he is growing half deaf?

– Nothing good, probably… – agreed Ivan.

– What do you mean? – Nekiforov was surprised.

– You see, the head is twitching, – clarified Ivan and started twitching his own head to show.

Having seen that, the young Nekiforov stopped crying and started gazing at Ivan with interest.

– He is mocking us, – said his mom with confidence.

– Thinks he is the smartest, – concluded her husband.

– Gu-gu! – screamed their son, while laughing and clapping hands.
