This major originated as a response to the lack of representation in the Theater and Dance departments at St. Olaf. It was important to me to create a major that allowed me both as a performer and an ally, to create spaces in the performing arts for immigrants, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
The major simultaneously examines the interactions between identity and inclusivity. To do so, there are three areas of study: 1) the body and the mind, 2) the self, and 3) the community. An education in the Performing Arts should be accessible to all, regardless of their complex identity. However, this is limited by enforced systems of oppression, which need to be challenged by cultivating inclusivity — an intersectional atmosphere where diverse identities are celebrated. Therefore, to understand how identity and inclusivity relate in the performing arts, it is relevant for me to learn the artistic and social components that influence these interactions.
Esta carrera nació como respuesta a la falta de representación en los departamentos de Teatro y Danza de St. Olaf. Para mí era importante crear una especialización que me permitiera, como intérprete y aliade, crear espacios en las artes escénicas para inmigrantes, personas de color e individuos LGBTQ+.
La carrera examina simultáneamente las interacciones entre identidad e inclusión. Para ello, existen tres áreas de estudio: 1) el cuerpo y la mente, 2) el yo y 3) la comunidad. La educación en artes escénicas debería ser accesible para todos, independientemente de su identidad compleja. Sin embargo, esto se ve limitado por los sistemas de opresión impuestos, que deben ser desafiados cultivando la inclusión: una atmósfera interseccional donde se celebran las diversas identidades. Por lo tanto, para comprender cómo se relacionan la identidad y la inclusión en las artes escénicas, es relevante para mí aprender los componentes artísticos y sociales que influyen en estas interacciones.
