Annotated Bibliography

This is a list of resources that I used as a library or other resource materials. Here are the five most important:

Commito, Angela. “The Cities of Southern Asia Minor in the Sixth Century.” in: Jacobs, I., and Elton, Hugh. Asia Minor in the Long Sixth Century: Current Research and Future Directions. (Oxford: Oxbow Books, 2019).

This source discusses urbanization in Southern Asia Minor throughout the 6th century and how city living changed from urbanization. Commito explains that cities are a way of measuring social transformation. The measuring of social transformation has identified the 6th century as a tipping point between Greco-Roman antiquity and the Byzantine world.

Perkins, Judith. “Constructing A Patriarchal Elite.” Roman Imperial identities in the Early Christian Era. (London: Routledge, 2009).

This book discusses Roman Imperial identities in the early Christian Era by studying texts. Perkins exams the themes of cosmopolitan and multiethnic cultural identities emerging in the early centuries CE between the elites and the Christians.

Praetzellis, A. “How Theory Works.” Archaeological Theory in a Nutshell, 9-28. (London and New York: Routledge 2016).

This chapter discusses how archaeological theory operates. Praetzellis walks the reader through the way archaeology is practiced and the history of archaeological theory. Praetzellis answers the question of why we must have theory with practice.

Uytterhoeven, Inge. “A Change of Appearance. Urban Housing in Asia Minor During the Sixth Century.” in: Jacobs, I., and Elton, Hugh. Asia Minor in the Long Sixth Century: Current Research and Future Directions. (Oxford: Oxbow Books, 2019).

This book discusses the urban and rural transitions that took place in the 4th and 5th centuries in Asia Minor. Uytterhoeven discusses how imposing mansions in towns of Asia Minor illustrate that members of the upper political, ecclesiastical, and socio-economic layers of the society made themselves visible and represented their power through private buildings.

Zetterholm, Magnus. The Formation of Christianity in Antioch: a Social-Scientific Approach to the Separation Between Judaism and Christianity (London; Routledge, 2003).

This book uses theoretical insights from social sciences to understand the complex issues raised by the parting of Judaism and Christianity. Zetterholm analysis the relationship between Judaism and Christianity in the 1st century and the Christian origins.
