St. Olaf President <\/span><b>Susan Rundell Singer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will welcome conference goers to campus on Thursday morning. Following her welcome, <\/span><b>Deidre Whiteman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will deliver the first keynote talk.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fl-photo-img wp-image-16679 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Deidre-Whiteman.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Deidre-Whiteman.png 1080w, https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Deidre-Whiteman-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Deidre-Whiteman-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Deidre-Whiteman-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Deidre-Whiteman-768x768.png 768w\" alt=\"Deidre Whiteman\" width=\"168\" height=\"168\" \/>Deidre Whiteman is the Director of Research and Education <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at <a href=\"https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/\">National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition<\/a> (NABS). In this role she educates and promotes dialogue within and between indigenous and immigrant communities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her career has included many talks on various impacts of settler-colonialism, most notably Native American boarding schools, which her grandparents attended in the 1920s and 1930s.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Deidre Whiteman is Spirit Lake Dakota and Hidatsa and is also a descendant of the Meskwaki and Turtle Mt. Ojibwe Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we work towards greater understanding of Norwegian-American history, including the interactions between and shared histories of Indigenous Americans and Norwegian immigrants and their descendants, her voice is a valuable addition to our conference.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following this keynote, researcher Dr. Anna Peterson will hold a plenary session highlighting three specific cases of Norwegian American\/Native American interactions: Norwegians and the US-Dakota War of 1862, Norwegians on the Spirit Lake Reservation, and the Norwegian-American run Bethany Indian Mission.
