Mapping Japan Events: Student Panel Discussion
“Mapping Japan’s Geopolitics through Carleton’s Map Collection”. What is the role of maps in Japan’s geopolitics? Students will present the rare maps in Carleton’s collections that facilitated Japan’s territorial claims, wartime actions, and colonialism. Students will shed light on Carleton’s hidden map collection that was largely forgotten until the 2020s, uncovering the staggering connection between Carleton College and the US Wartime cartographic agencies such as Army Map Service and Office of Strategic Services. Refreshments will be served from 5pm.
