{"id":54,"date":"2019-06-30T14:36:03","date_gmt":"2019-06-30T19:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/bumblebee\/?page_id=54"},"modified":"2022-09-02T11:01:24","modified_gmt":"2022-09-02T16:01:24","slug":"how-to","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/bumblebee\/how-to\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How can I help monitor Northfield&#8217;s Bumble Bees (and bees in other regions)?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"direction-ltr align-start ql-indent-1 list-marker-odecimal para-style-body\"><strong>Take a photo <\/strong>that clearly shows the back of the bee, ideally with its wings spread (this can be hard and often results in fuzzy pictures)<\/li>\n<li class=\"direction-ltr align-start ql-indent-1 list-marker-odecimal para-style-body\"><strong>Take a video clip<\/strong> with your cell phone (10-15 seconds should work).\n<ul>\n<li class=\"direction-ltr align-start ql-indent-1 list-marker-odecimal para-style-body\"><strong>Review\u00a0the video and pause it<\/strong> at a point where the wings are spread and you can see the full pattern on the bee\u2019s back.<\/li>\n<li class=\"direction-ltr align-start ql-indent-1 list-marker-odecimal para-style-body\"><strong>Take a screen\u00a0shot<\/strong> of the video at the moment when you can see the full pattern on the bee&#8217;s back (*<em>see instructions below on ways of taking screen shots<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"direction-ltr align-start ql-indent-1 list-marker-odecimal para-style-body\"><strong>Submit your photo<\/strong> to the citizen science website, <a href=\"http:\/\/bumblebeewatch.org\">bumblebeewatch.org<\/a>, so bumble bee specialists can confirm what species you observed. If you take photos of other insects, submit those to <a href=\"http:\/\/inaturalist.org\">iNaturalist<\/a>.\u00a0 If you are submitting observations to bumble beewatch.org from the Northfield area <strong><em>be sure to select the Project Name <\/em><em>\u201cNorthfield Bumble Bee Count (St. Olaf)\u201d<\/em><em>\u00a0at the bottom of the page!<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Using Bumble Bee Watch\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p7Kp3Awf2MQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>*How do I take screenshots from videos?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>We have found it difficult to take photos of bees in action as they visit flowers, but we have had success taking short <strong>video clips<\/strong> and taking screenshots at the moment when bees are in focus and have their wings spread nicely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From your iphone&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ILfuVd NA6bn\"><span class=\"e24Kjd\">View the video and pause it at the point where you can see the bee clearly.\u00a0 Press the home and sleep buttons simultaneously. The screen will turn white and the shutter release sound will be heard. The image will appear in your camera roll.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>From your laptop or desktop&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you import your image into iphotos on your desk or laptop you can take a screenshot by freezing the video clip and either:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1) selecting command, shift, 4 all at the same time and choosing the part of the picture you would like to save (these files will end up on your desktop)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">2) choosing the &#8220;gear&#8221; icon in the bar of the video clip and choosing &#8220;Export Frame to Pictures&#8221; (these files will end up in your Photos folder on your hard drive)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How can I help monitor Northfield&#8217;s Bumble Bees (and bees in other regions)?
