The very, very first thing you should do before getting on that flight to T\u00fcrikye is one of two things; either download Turkish airlines on your phone, or print out your boarding pass. This may seem like a braindead tip, however I cannot stress enough how important it is to at least keep your flight verification code saved somewhere. This is because of one factor; Istanbul airport, which while it is in no way poorly maintained or managed, the simple fact that it’s incredibly massive will often lead to your luggage being left behind, even with relatively generous connection times. I had that happen to me, and I only had my boarding pass on my iphone wallet, which expired and deleted itself shortly after I landed, which led to a very fun night. You should not come into this program expecting significant down time, aside from the 6 hours of work, the 2 hours of pottery washing, dinner, and discussion will only really leave you with maybe two hours of real downtime per day. It’s not a bad thing, I personally found all of it to be really satisfying when I physically could do it, but if you do go into the program you should be expecting almost all of your time to be devoted to it. Apart from that though, the only advice I can really offer has already been emphasized by the course curriculum, namely stuff like the real nature of archeology being basically garden work, try to only bring the stuff on the packing list, etc. Now that I\u2019ve gotten all of that advice out of the way, you\u2019ll likely have a very good time during this trip, to actually go out on the field and do actual research with your own two hands is a very unique experience that you\u2019ll grow to love, even if that love is a bit hard to find in the moment. Finding what these people left behind, theorizing about it, and then revising said theories when we dig up the next layer has been an incredibly informative experience for me and has taught me so much about not just Archeology, but how historiography took shape as well. Which is all surprisingly irrelevant to the moment I remember most during our excavations, it was in part of the bathhouse called the Caulderium, the hottest part of the bath (a title it would carry on into the modern day, being very stuffy), we found out that an entire wall wasn\u2019t a wall at all, but debris that had piled up. When it was torn down, and felt that cool ocean breeze along with the seaside view for the first time in that room, I don\u2019t think I would\u2019ve traded that moment for a million bucks. That being said, even after all these amazing moments I experienced during the course of the program, I\u2019ve learned that this\u2019ll likely be a career I\u2019m not going to explore professionally, for while I loved doing all of this, its not something I feel like I could make a career out of. On one final note, I\u2019ll tell you of a very important lesson that I have taken to heart and will follow until my dying day; don\u2019t drink the tap water.
