I found pottery, bones, glass, slag, mosaic, bronze brackets, coins, a wall, a sewing pin, and a plaster floor. I think that my finds in the great bath suggest one or multiple earthquakes. The large amount of bronze pins show that the area was not looted after its abandonment which could suggest that when the room was destroyed, the damage was significant. This is also supported by the mosaic chunks that were found shattered throughout the room. ANS8 is a big mystery though. I think the first plaster chunk we found and the packed earth path suggest that this area was very high in traffic. I think this could be related to all of the valuables we found. It is hard to tell if this area was indoors or outdoors. Possibly indoors and then outdoors? I feel confident about knowing what happened in the great bath. I think the room was put out of service by an earthquake and then repurposed into industry. I then think another earthquake made the room unusable. I know Claire had mentioned talks of there not being industry in half of the room because of significant earthquake damage, but I do not know what was found to suggest that idea. ANS8 I don’t think I can draw any conclusions on. There are only more questions to be asked. Where did the packed earth path lead? Why was there plaster covering a wall? Are we indoors or outdoors? Why were there so many valuables localized in one area across vastly different depths? What was this area used for? Why was there a small burn layer that went so deep? In the great bath my theories changed a lot. I initially thought that half of the room didn’t have a heated floor because we weren’t finding any pilae, but then we started finding pilae. I then thought that the burns on the floor came from falling lamps which hung on brackets. I then learned that the brackets we were finding were used for holding marble and not lamps. Then I settled on the repurposed for industry idea which it sounds like was brought into question further after my time at the great bath ended. Next year I think it would be good to keep digging in ANS8 to find out more about that wall that was covered with plaster. I also think that the area between ANS8 and ANS9 would be good to dig up as it seems like the natural continuation of the areas currently being explored. I also think the room to the west of ANS8 should continue to be excavated further as to help provide more context to the whole area. This area is such a mystery due to the seeming randomness of the finds and very odd layout of the entire area. <\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
During my time digging, I found lots of things.
