This later formed a separate room feature with flagstone flooring near the northern terrace wall. We later found two other wall features. One directly under our western wall and one in the center of our unit spanning the west and east walls, parallel to the south wall. During our first few passes, we found very little bone, ceramic, and glass. In our later passes, we gradually discovered more pottery, but still few bones. My group is the second to dig in this unit during this season, and the previous units found bulk pottery and bone. At the center of the southern wall were several burnt areas, with charcoal next to the eastern wall feature. North of the center wall feature were several voids, suggesting the wall continues further down. South of the northern terrace wall was about a meter-long area of plaster. Due to the discovery of the central wall feature, we are likely still far from bedrock, and instead we are possibly above an existing feature. The lack of pottery and bone from our first few passes, as well as the voids in front of the center wall feature, suggest a large amount of rockfall, though I am unsure if it was gradual or all at once. Another possible reason for the lack of finds could be the wealth of the people residing there during this period. I believe that towards the end of the area’s use, people living there may have been poorer and held onto more of their belongings than an area where wealthy people may have resided. Since there are several walls, it is difficult to conclude if they are connected or not, and could possibly be from several different buildings. Since we discovered flagstone flooring in the room feature, it was likely built on top of the central wall feature. Originally, upon arrival at the site and the discovery of the western wall and eastern room feature, I originally believed that they were either separate homes with space between them, or one whole area due to their proximity to the northern terrace wall. The discovery of the plaster near the wall was fascinating due to its abnormal size and shape, as well as the area it spanned. In the southern area of the unit, we had assumed we had reached bedrock due to a cut bedrock behind the eastern room feature. Dark red schist I had assumed was bedrock spanned across the southern wall, but after discovering large sherds of pottery and the large voids from rockfall, we realized that the unit went deeper. Ultimately, on the last day, we discovered the central wall feature. While articulating it, I found lots of pottery sherds on top of and in between stones on the wall feature. Next season, I hope for the unit to be expanded and the central wall feature to be articulated. My hope is for the unit to expand on the western and eastern sides to uncover and better articulate the features on those sides. I also hope for the uncovering of the central wall feature. By the southern wall feature and in the southern part of the room feature, the soil is a deep red, possibly from the schist, meaning the wall may go under either. I am curious to know if and why the wall is buried, and how our discovery structures were built on top of them, as well as their age. Similarly, I am interested in the cause of the possible fire near the center of the unit and if it’s related to the rockfall over the center wall feature.

Final Thoughts and Reflections on Excavating ANS 9 in Antiochia ad Cragum Upon my arrival at ANS 9, there was a collection of stones forming a wall-like feature against the eastern wall.
