If I was asked \u201cSo, you have archaeology in T\u00fcrkiye on your resum\u00e9; tell me about that,\u201d from a potential employer I would focus on two key qualities I felt I had developed and applied during my internship and time in T\u00fcrkiye. Adaptability was the first key quality I felt had great importance to me. Coming to an entirely new environment and new place felt like a jump into the unknown prior to arriving. Once I was here I felt I had to quickly adapt to the conditions and try to make the most of my experience. While I was not able to get used to the heat quite so well, I did try to get into a new routine and take what each day gave me. Waking up at 5 a.m. every morning was very different to what I had been doing for the rest of the summer and it took me some time to properly get used to it. I tried my best to \u201cgo with the flow\u201d at times and went through the day trying to enjoy it to the fullest, from digging in our trench to washing pottery, even if I felt uncomfortable, dirty, and tired. That is not to say I always had an amazing time, and when I did have particularly tough days I often became less talkative and had some time to myself listening to other people talk as I tried to reset my mentality. After we switched units I filled in for another sick student and tried my best to blend into the environment and to do my best work in a different place that I was not expecting. Through this time I came to appreciate that adaptability is not always being ready and happy to go with whatever but also being able to keep going when you may not be having a great time in a rocky trench as the sun blazes down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly, I would emphasize the importance of teamwork as a key quality. Teamwork did not just apply to whatever unit one was presently digging in, but from the Acropolis to the whole site, everyone had to work together. That may have been something small like making sure bags and crates were carried to the right place at the end of the day or something more direct like getting along with the people working right next to you. The fact is that you are usually next to other people all day long and getting along with them is paramount. I felt like I was able to blend into whatever situation I was in with others, mainly because of how welcoming everyone was but also through being adaptable as previously mentioned. I also usually try to do my best to keep the mood in a good place throughout the day and try to keep up conversations to make the work go smoother and faster. Through this I found when all members of the team, immediate and extended, can get along to some degree then work goes much easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDoing archaeology\u201d in a different country to my own has given me many skills that go beyond just one discipline. I learned many practical things that relate to the archaeological field, like how to make passes and opening loci that could serve me well in other digs if I pursue the subject further. However, I also got to interact with Turkish peers and academics on and off site who expanded my knowledge of many different things. I felt like I grew socially as well, exploring the city and nearby areas of Gazipa<\/span>\u015fa with our group of students. Sharing these new experiences with other people helped me create not just memories and friends but also learned skills that can help me for years to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
