I was able to go to Turkey for a month during my last summer of college to work at a field school at the site Antiochia ad Cragum. That was my first experience with hands-on archaeology, and it was a fantastic learning experience. Besides learning all of the ins and outs of practicing archaeology, such as what to do with finds, how to take a picture of your unit, etc., I also learned a lot about the interpersonal nature of archaeology. Being a unit with your team and being able to work together and have a good relationship is so important to foster a collaborative and healthy environment, and my experience at Antiochia really highlighted that. There’s no way to do archaeology effectively if everyone is not working together to get the job done.

Besides those more large-scale realizations, I was also able to gain experience in things that really interest me, such as photogrammetry. The idea that we can have exact 3D replicas of features and artifacts that are so lasting is a fascinating concept to me. For example, there was a wall in the middle of a room we were excavating that was built many years after the original structure, so we planned to take it down as we took off soil layers. The wall had already been studied by an earlier team, but we felt that it would be best to have a model of it at our disposal just in case. So, we took images of the wall and were able to produce an amazing 3D model. It is these kinds of niche interests that really drive my love of archaeology, those that allow me to gain insight into the processes and developments of the field.

One other very important aspect of this work was that we were working in a foreign country very different from our own. I got into Gazipasa the day before we started working, and then off I was, working with Turkish colleagues and immersing myself in a completely different culture. It took a second to adapt but once I did it was such an incredible experience. At the end of the day, that field school really allowed me to realize how important adventures like that are and to really embrace those kinds of opportunities when they come to you.

Yes!
