Well, if you\u2019re Marian Anderson <\/span>then you go to a bigger and better venue. In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution\u2019s Concert Hall barred Marian Anderson from performing due to racial discrimination. There had been a clause written into every contract issued by the Daughters of the American Revolution that instituted a white-only policy. Her response was to instead hold a concert at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-876\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.stolaf.edu\/musicandfairytales\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1712\/2024\/11\/Screen-Shot-2024-11-22-at-11.02.39-AM.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Donnell Lewis&#8217; 1990 Census Poster of the event<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Initially invited to perform as a part of a concert series held by Howard University, they were hard-pressed to find a venue that would hold the sheer amount of people who wanted to watch her perform. She starts the concert with My Country \u2019Tis of Thee, and follows with two arias (Donizetti\u2019s La Favorite, Schubert\u2019s Ave Maria) and three spirituals (Gospel Train, Trampin\u2019, and My Soul is Anchored in the Lord).<\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/azhGpvvRu9s?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There is a lot to think about when looking at this event. There have been so many obstacles that have been put in front of black artist\u2019s lives and careers based on racial discrimination.
