Those who identify as \u201cGeneration Z\u201d (ie people between the ages of 12-27), likely encounter political propaganda through unconventional platforms, such as social media, specifically TikTok and Instagram. While scrolling through TikTok, I frequently come across political videos paired with music, drawing attention to the role of sound in political messaging (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/t\/ZP88oAkGY\/\">example here<\/a>). In light of our discussions on protest music and social change, one song has entered the public consciousness as an \u201cunspoken anthem\u201d for the Harris\/Walz campaign: \u201cFreedom\u201d by Beyonc\u00e9 Knowles Carter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a CBS news article posted in late October, Beyonc\u00e9 was reported to have endorsed (declaring one\u2019s public approval of) Harris for President of the United States of America at a Harris rally for reproductive rights in Houston, Texas this October, giving Harris a warm welcome to her [Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s] home-town crowd:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.abcnewsfe.com\/a\/0a845e83-8a93-4909-9abd-bc45090ecae9\/beyonce-harris-mo_1729910398316_hpEmbed_23x15.jpg\" width=\"415\" height=\"276\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beyonc\u00e9 speaking at Harris Reproductive Rally, October 2024<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It&#8217;s time for America to sing a new song. Our voices sing a chorus of unity. They sing a song of dignity and opportunity. Are y&#8217;all ready to add your voice to the new American song?&#8221; she said. &#8220;Ladies and gentlemen, please give a big, loud, Texas welcome to the next president of the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/beyonce-willie-nelson-houston-rally-kamala-harris-reproductive-rights\/\">CBS<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This profound musically-themed statement speaks to the tradition of protest songs within politics, which have historically served as powerful anthems for social change and collective resilience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Campaign songs are used when candidates wish to constitute their identity in sound, \u201cto sonically construct themselves in a way that appeals to the public as well as offers insight into their character and their beliefs\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/culture\/367709\/beyonce-freedom-kamala-harris-campaign-songs\">Morrison<\/a>).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In Harris\u2019 current campaign, she includes various black artists \u2013 Aretha Franklin, Megan Thee Stallion, Whitney Houston, Beyonc\u00e9, and more to cultivate a rich soundtrack for her presidential narrative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/5\/53\/Beyonce_-_Lemonade_%28Official_Album_Cover%29.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Lemonade&#8221;, recorded in 2016 by Beyonc\u00e9, features artists Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and more.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One standout track is Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201cFreedom\u201d, recorded on her 2016 album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lemonade (<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/7aBxcRw77817BrkdPChAGY?si=544c1cb8752a422a\">Spotify<\/a>).<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0The song \u201csamples two John and Alan Lomax field recordings, which document Jim Crow-era folk spirituals of Southern Black churches and the work songs of Black prisoners from 1959 and 1948, respectively&#8221; (Morrison).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Compared to her previous campaign song, Mary J. Blige\u2019s \u201cWork That,\u201d \u201cFreedom\u201d adopts a more urgent tone, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">enhanced by gospel signifiers and its textual reference to the African American spiritual \u201cWade in the Water\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/digital.library.yorku.ca\/node\/1099291\">Burleigh<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0549\/1920\/0848\/files\/KAMALA-16-20-CASSINOVA-FULL-LOGO3-signed-print_550x825.png?v=1724355626\" width=\"550\" height=\"688\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harris\/Walz campaign propaganda poster with the words, &#8220;FREEDOM&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By choosing \u201cFreedom,\u201d Harris aligns her campaign message with the empowering narrative embodied in Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s music, which symbolizes feminine vitality and perseverance.
